Hoodia Patch

The hoodia patch is latest of the weight loss patch products to hit the shelves. But the biggest question on people's mind is: does it work? To many people, the thought of putting a patch on their skin and then loosing weight seems like a dream come true. Unfortunately, reality may not necessarily live up to the hype.

The Science On Patches In General

Scientists used to think that the skin was a solid, protective barrier that didn't allow anything through to the blood stream. When it was discovered that this wasn't the case, and that certain molecules could indeed be absorbed into the body by contact with the skin, pharmaceutical companies raced to be able to offer medicines via a patch.

Pharmaceutical companies thought that their customers would find patches more conveneient to use, and that they would deliver a more consistent dosage than pills. But what they found was that not every type of drug will be absorbed through the skin. Which explains why so few medicines are available today via patch – otherwise, nearly every prescription would be available in patch form.

The medicines that are available via patch – such as birth control, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and nicotine for smoking cessation – have been strenuously tested in multiple clinical trials before being offered to consumers.

Which brings us back to the Hoodia patch.

The Science On Hoodia Patches

Unfortunately, there simply is no science on the Hoodia patch. Unlike medications by Big Pharma (and on orally ingested Hoodia products), there have been absolutely no clinical trials on the effectiveness of Hoodia patches. We simply have no evidence whatsoever that the active ingredient in Hoodia (P57) is one of those molecules that will pass through the protective layer of the skin.

Besides that, the only medications that have been shown to be effective in patch form are those that are effective in a low dose. In fact, the largest daily dose of drug in patch form is that of nicotine: twenty-one milligrams. Compare that with the 750mg necessary for Hoodia to have a noticeable effect, and you see why we at Hoodia-Facts.com just cannot recommend the Hoodia patch at this time.
